Data-Driven Innovation: How Known-You Seed Is Building a Smarter Breeding Future

Known-You Seed - Breeding App

In an era where AI and big data are transforming every industry, even the creation of a single seed is entering a new phase of intelligence. Founded in 1968, Known-You Seed — a company built on independent R&D and global operations — has long specialized in improving tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables.

Facing the dual pressures of climate change and fast-shifting market needs, the company is restructuring its breeding process through digitalization and AI, guiding traditional agriculture toward smarter practices.

For decades, breeding at Known-You relied heavily on experience and intuition. Breeders observed plants in the field and recorded everything manually before transcribing the data into digital files. Different teams kept records in their own formats, making it difficult to consolidate or compare data over time. As climate change intensified, these traditional methods were increasingly challenged, and varieties once regarded as strong performers began to show inconsistent results when grown under shifting environmental conditions.

“Some varieties thrive beautifully in Taiwan but perform very differently once they’re grown abroad,” says Chia-hui Chang, vice general manager and Director of R&D at Known-You Seed. “We used to rely on experience to make those judgments, but as environmental shifts become more dramatic, that experience is no longer as dependable.” A plant’s growth and quality are shaped not only by its genetics but also by factors such as climate, soil conditions, and water availability.

Integrating weather and microclimate data from the global weather station to guide farming decisions

To better manage the many variables involved in modern breeding, Known-You established its Molecular Breeding Laboratory in 2010, enabling systematic collection of genetic, weather, growth-performance, and sensor-based data to build a decision-oriented database. The company also began digitizing its workflows by introducing tools such as the Breeding App and the Trial Management System, which helped standardize experimental procedures and streamline data management across teams.

In recent years, the company has introduced AI-driven image analysis and spectrum-based non-destructive testing (using light wavelengths to measure internal quality without cutting the fruit) into its breeding workflow. These tools allow breeders to capture key fruit traits from a single photograph and even estimate sweetness without cutting into the sample. “We used to slice and measure every fruit by hand. Now a photo gives us the same information — faster and with far greater consistency,” Chang says. The shift has accelerated data collection and helped establish more unified evaluation standards across teams.

One standout result of this digital transformation is the Sweet-Sour Melon, a variety that blends a naturally tangy character with the sweetness of the High-Brix Melon. Developed over nearly a decade, its characteristics differ markedly across growing environments. Through multi-location trials and cross-regional data comparison, the team found that European regions with large day-night temperature variations best bring out its balanced flavor profile, allowing both acidity and sweetness to express more fully. This achievement has become a milestone in Known-You Seed’s progress toward data-driven breeding.

Calculating heat and light accumulation to assess crop growth and adaptability

To Chang, digital transformation is not just a technical upgrade but a shift in how the organization works and thinks. Known-You pairs its seasoned breeders with a new generation of data analysts, allowing hands-on field experience to meet data-driven decision-making. As for encouraging longtime breeders to embrace these new tools, Chang says, “Sometimes you have to repeat the message, or even stage a small revolution — more than a few times. Eventually, people become curious enough to give it a try.”

The purpose of adopting AI and digital tools at Known-You goes far beyond keeping up with the trends; it is about making breeding faster, leaner, and more resource-efficient. Automated analysis and integrated data systems give the team clearer visibility into the pace of each breeding project, helping long-running programs move forward with greater control and efficiency. This shift allows both talent and funding to be focused on the stages that matter most, turning years of accumulated expertise into a more sustainable engine for innovation.

As data becomes the foundation of decision-making and AI evolves into a genuine partner for breeders, smart breeding is no longer just a technological upgrade. It marks a new chapter in which Taiwan’s seed industry is reshaping its role and value on the global stage.
